1.  Document Purpose

This document describes how to use Gift Guru™ 1.0, a QUALCOMM BREW™ application developed by Mamlambo, Inc.

Gift Guru™ 1.0 is a productivity application whose purpose is to allow the user to manage gift wish lists, important dates and clothing sizes of their friends and family in an organized way. The application also reminds the users about upcoming important dates and can be used to convert between clothing sizes from various countries.

2.  Gift Guru™ User Interface Overview

1.2.1        Main User Interface

1.2.1.1       Main User Interface Use Cases

The first area is referred to as the Main User Interface. When the user first launches the Gift Guru™ Application, they enter the Main User Interface. Here the user may navigate to the other functional areas of the application; as well as manage configuration tasks such as changing the application language, view the application version and the main help text.

Use Case: Changing the Language

Gift Guru™ 1.0 ships with two languages – English and Spanish. The language support is part of the application, and will work regardless of whether the phone has native language support in these languages. You can change the language in which the application functions by accessing the Language item on the Main Menu. The language chosen will persist across application launches.

Use Case: Read the Main Help

The Gift Guru™ application has three help pages – Main Help (General), Gift Management Help, and Size Conversion Help. Below you’ll see the Main Help Screens. Choose the Help item from the menu to bring you to a Help screen. You can tab through the help using the up and down keys, as well as the number keys. When finished, hit the Back/Clear key to return to the previous screen.

Use Case: Read the About Box (App Version, etc)

Although this is a rather simple use case, it can be important for determining the version of the Gift Guru™ application. Simply choose the About Gift Guru item from the Main Menu to view the About screen. This screen will show for several seconds before returning to the Main Menu. You can also return to the Main menu while the About screen is showing by pressing any normal key (e.g. any key except things like the END key, which will exit the app).

1.2.1.2       Main User Interface FAQ

This section is used to document any frequently asked questions about the Gift Guru™ Application regarding general functionality.

Q: What happens when the application is launched?
A: First the Splash Screen is shown for about 5 seconds, followed by the loading of any gift recipient data. Then each Date Reminder triggered is shown for about 5 seconds. Finally, the user is brought to the main menu.

Q: How do I skip through the Splash Screen and Date Reminders?
A: Pressing any key will skip to the next reminder without waiting the full 5 seconds each.

Q: My phone doesn’t have BREW™ soft keys, so how do I access the buttons along the bottom of the screen?
A: The Gift Guru™ application was written for use with and without soft keys. All users have the option of using Press-and-Hold functionality instead of the soft keys:

Left Buttons (Add, Back):                   Press-and-Hold the * key
Middle Button (Text Mode):                Press-and-Hold the 0 key
Right Buttons (Save, Delete):             Press-and-Hold the # key

Note: To Press-and-Hold, user holds key down for about 1.5 seconds

Q: How do I change text modes on the screens with the middle button?
A: The user has the option to change the application’s default text input mode on any of the input screens. These screens are the Config, Wish, Size and Important Date screens. The middle button at the bottom of the screen will inform you what the current text mode is set to. In order to change this setting, the user must Press-and-Hold the 0 key to access the text mode menu.

Q: My phone supports all sorts of cool Text Entry Modes, are they available in Gift Guru™ for use?
A: Not all text input modes supported by the phone are available in the Text Mode Menu. Due to the limited text mode support of BREW 1.1, and the fact that some text modes on some phones may be available but cause crashes (e.g. documented T9 issues on the Vx6000), the Gift Guru™ application limits the available text modes instead of enumerating available text input modes on the handset. In general, the user will always have Numbers and Multitap available, and sometimes T9/Rapid support.

1.2.2        Gift Management Interface

1.2.2.1       Gift Management Interface Use Cases

The second area is referred to as the Gift Management Interface. Here the user can manage gift information for their friends and family. Wish lists, clothing sizes, and important dates are saved for each individual (E.g. An entry for my wife might have several records reflecting that she would love a diamond tennis bracelet from Tiffany’s, she wears size 7 ½ ski boot, and our 10th wedding anniversary is on June 8th, so I had better not forget it). The Gift Management Screens are centered on the Main Gift Management Menu where all gift recipients are listed and the Individual Gift Management Menu where all information is stored for a specific gift recipient (E.g. My Wife).

Navigation within the Gift Management User Interface involves selecting items from menus, using the buttons along the bottom of the screen (Create, Delete, Back, Save, text mode changing), and using the Clear/Back key to navigate up through the Gift Management screens to the Main Menu again.

Use Case: Creating a Gift Recipient

When you want to save wishes, sizes and important dates for someone, you need to create a gift recipient. This involves naming the recipient, and selecting a type for them. The types are: Man, Woman, Girl, Boy, and Infant. The type of gift recipient will help organize your recipients, with different icons to match. You can create up to 20 gift recipients with this version of Gift Guru™.

Use Case: Deleting a Gift Recipient

Deleting a Gift Recipient is easy. You simply choose the item you wish to delete, and confirm your delete action. Note that if you delete a gift recipient, all his or her wishes, dates and sizes will be deleted as well.

Use Case: Creating a Gift Recipient Size

Once you’ve got yourself a gift recipient, you’ll want to start keeping track of some pertinent gift information for that person. You can keep track of up to 10 sizes for each gift recipient – for example: shoe size, shirt size, ski boot size, ski length, and wetsuit size.

Use Case: Creating a Gift Recipient Date

Once you’ve got yourself a gift recipient, you’ll want to start keeping track of some pertinent gift information for that person. You can keep track of up to 3 important dates for each gift recipient – for example: birthday, anniversary and graduation date.

The Gift Guru™ application will post Date Reminder screens when you launch the application, when the date of the event will occur this month or next month.  As Gift Guru™ dates are generally recurring, they do not have years. Thus the application will remind you of your anniversary every year, not just the first year.

Use Case: Creating a Gift Recipient Wish

Once you’ve got yourself a gift recipient, you’ll want to start keeping track of some pertinent gift information for that person. You can keep track of up to 3 wishes in a wish list for each gift recipient – for example: a new car, a new computer and a new camera.

1.2.2.2       Gift Management FAQ

This section is used to document any frequently asked questions about the Gift Guru™ Application regarding the Gift Management functionality.

Q: How many contacts can you store within the Gift Guru™ Application?
A: The user can store a total of 20 gift recipients (or contacts). Each gift recipient can have 3 important dates, 3 wishes, and 10 sizes

Q: When will my reminders go off?
A: Every time the Gift Guru™ application is launched, it checks for any dates coming this month or next month. These are the dates shown to the user upon application start-up.

Q: Will I be reminded about important dates on my phone if I do not run the Gift Guru™ application?
A: No. One might expect that the application would launch itself to remind a user of an upcoming date. However, in this version of Gift Guru™, the user is reminded only when they launch the application manually. You must launch the application to receive reminders.

Q: I’m editing a specific gift recipient. How do I get back to the Main Menu?
A: The gift management screens are numerous. You navigate up through the screens using the Back/Clear button. This is especially important from any screen with buttons along the bottom. It can be confusing that there is no button for the Main Menu. E.g. If you are on the Wish Management menu for John Doe, and wish to see what size shoe Jane Doe wears, you would hit Back (to the John Doe Gift Management screen), Back again (to the Main Gift Management screen), and Select Jane Doe, and then choose her Size Management icon, and choose her Shoe Size item.

Q: How do I tab between fields on the input forms like the Config, Wish, Date, and Size pages?
A: Generally, the user can navigate between form fields using the Select/Ok key. On newer phones (with newer BREW™ versions), the user can also change focus between controls using the arrow keys.

1.2.3        Size Conversion Interface

1.2.3.1       Size Conversion Interface Use Cases

The third area is referred to as the Size Conversion Interface. Here the user can convert the sizes of various clothing articles from one country/unit to another. The Size Conversion functionality is a simple wizard which can, for example, convert your US men’s shoe size of 9 into its equivalent size in the UK.

Use Case: Convert A Size

1.2.3.2       Size Conversion FAQ

This section is used to document any frequently asked questions about the Gift Guru™ Application regarding the Size Conversion functionality.

Q: Why aren’t all sizes shown in the size conversion wizard?
A: The sizes available for conversion are not always at regular intervals. Unfortunately, the world did not standardize on clothing and shoe sizes. In some cases, no equivalent is possible. Therefore, you will not always see all size possibilities available for conversion. Only sizes with very close approximate equivalents are available for conversion. All sizes are best approximations anyway, so try to find the size closest to your own and use your best judgment.

Q: I tried to convert my size and I got “NA” as a result. What’s up?
A: Not all sizes available have equivalents across all countries. Unfortunately, the world did not standardize on clothing and shoe sizes. In some cases, no equivalent is possible. For example, is it very difficult to find some of the larger sizes typical of US/UK markets in Japan. Therefore, if there is no size equivalent, an NA is displayed as the equivalent size.

Q: I bought the size suggested by Gift Guru™ and it didn’t fit! What’s up with that?
A: Unfortunately, the world did not standardize on sizes. Most sizes are relative, even within a country. Just think of all the different denim jean cuts available in the United States – they may all have the same size, but the cut might be slim, casual, etc. There is no guarantee that an item will fit based on a size conversion. Gift Guru™ is a tool to help you choose wisely, but it is by no means a guarantee. There is no substitute for trying something on.
