1.  Document Purpose

This document describes how to use Go Fish! Monterey Bay 1.0, a QUALCOMM BREW® application developed by Mamlambo, Inc.

Go Fish! Monterey Bay is a single-player game based on the classic card game Go Fish!  with some new twists like cheat modes and a rather surly opponent named Cap’n Bob who taunts you and adjusts his game play to your skill level for unlimited challenging games.

You are a marine biologist collecting specimens of sea life in Monterey Bay, California. The object of the game is to make sets of four creatures (e.g. Four Great White Sharks) thus protecting the species and out-scoring your opponent.

The application also educates by showing some stunning photography of some of the endangered species of the Monterey Bay and North American coastline. A portion of the proceeds for the application goes to marine conservation efforts.

2.  Go Fish! Monterey Bay User Interface Overview

1.2.1        Main User Interface

1.2.1.1       Main User Interface Use Cases

The first area is referred to as the Main User Interface. When the user first launches the Go Fish! Monterey Bay Application, they enter the Main User Interface. Here the user may navigate to the other functional areas of the application; as well as manage configuration tasks such as changing the application language, changing the game options, viewing the application version and the main help text.

Use Case: Changing the Language

Go Fish! Monterey Bay 1.0 ships with two languages – English and Spanish. The language support is part of the application, and will work regardless of whether the phone has native language support in these languages. You can change the language in which the application functions by accessing the Language item on the Main Menu. The language chosen will persist across application launches.

Use Case: Read the Help

Choose the Help item from the Main menu to bring you to the Help screen. You can tab through the help using the up and down keys, as well as the number keys. When finished, hit the Back/Clear key to return to the previous screen.

Use Case: Change Game Modes

Choose the Options item from the Main menu to bring you to the Game Modes screen. Here you control the game modes for you and your nemesis, Cap’n Bob. You can tab between the two game mode fields using the OK/Select key. Use the Up and Down arrows to change the values of a given field. When finished, save your changes using the 3 key or the right soft key. Cancel your changes and return to the Main Menu using the 1 key or the left soft key.

Game Modes:
HONEST - Must play by the rules.
SLY - Can break the rules several times per game
CRAFTY - Can break the rules many times per game

Use Case: Read the About Box (App Version, etc)

Although this is a rather simple use case, it can be important for determining the version of the Go Fish! Monterey Bay application. Simply choose the About item from the Main Menu to view the About screen. This screen will show for several seconds before returning to the Main Menu. You can also return to the Main menu while the About screen is showing by pressing any normal key (e.g. any key except things like the END key, which will exit the app).

1.2.1.2       Main User Interface FAQ

This section is used to document any frequently asked questions about the Go Fish! Monterey Bay Application regarding general functionality.

Q: What happens when the application is launched?
A: First the Splash Screen is shown for about 5 seconds, followed by the Main Menu.

Q: How do I skip through the Splash Screen?
A: Pressing any key will skip to the main menu without waiting the full 5 seconds.

Q: What is Go Fish! Monterey Bay and what is the object of the game?
A: Go Fish! Monterey Bay is a single-player game based on the classic card game Go Fish! You are a marine biologist collecting specimens of sea life in Monterey Bay, California. Cap'n Bob, a crafty local fisherman, is also catching creatures in his net. The object of the game is to make sets of four creatures (e.g. Four Pelicans), for your research, thus protecting the species.

Q: What are the basic rules to Go Fish! Monterey Bay?
A: The game uses an ocean of 36 creatures of 9 different species, all currently living in the Monterey Bay. You begin the game with 5 creatures in your boat. On each turn, you ask Cap'n Bob for creatures that will help you make a set. Cap'n Bob will either give you the creatures you asked for, or tell you to "Go Fish!" if he doesn't have any. Any time you get what you asked for - either from Cap'n Bob or the ocean - you will get another turn. The same rules apply to Cap'n Bob on his turns. The game ends when either you or Cap'n Bob run out of creatures in your boat.

Q: How do I tab between fields on the Options screen & what do they mean?
A: Generally, the user can navigate between form fields using the Select/Ok key. On newer phones (with newer BREW® versions), the user can also change focus between controls using the left and right arrow keys. You can choose from nine different game modes by configuring the honesty levels for you and your adversary, Cap'n Bob.

HONEST - Must play by the rules.
SLY - Can break the rules several times per game.
CRAFTY - Can break the rules many times per game.

Note: The more games you play, the more Cap'n Bob will adjust his game play and adapt his abilities to match your own skills and challenge you!

Q: What’s this I hear about marine conservation?
A: Go Fish! Monterey Bay was developed by Mamlambo, Inc., a company situated on the Monterey Bay.  A portion of the proceeds generated from Go Fish! Monterey Bay will be donated to the marine conservation efforts and aquariums, to benefit endangered creatures like the Southern Sea Otter and the Great White Shark. Game Interface

1.2.1.3       Game Interface Use Cases

The second area is referred to as the Game Interface. These screens make up the flow of game play for the user. The user’s decisions and the game logic determine the user interface flow of the application, but in general, you can expect the screens to flow as follows:

Your Turn: Ask for creatures and either receive them or be told to Go Fish!
Bob’s Turn: Bob asks you for creatures and you answer.

Navigation within the Game Interface involves selecting items from menus, and using the buttons along the bottom of the screen (Yes, No, OK).

General Game Controls for All Use Cases:

Yes Button: Press the 3 key, the right soft key, or the OK/SELECT key
No Button:
Press the 1 key or the left soft key
OK Button:
Press the 3 key, the right soft key, or the OK/SELECT key

Use Case: Starting a New Game

When you start a new game, you will begin with the main game screen, where you can see what creatures you have in your boat, as well as the game score. As you can see below, you have some Starfish, some Sea Turtles and Great Egrets in your boat. The number of creatures you have is shown next to the name of the species.  E.g. In the screens below, the user has 1 Great Egret. Playing in Honest mode, you can only ask for creatures you have in your boat. Playing in Sly or Crafty modes, you will see all creatures you may ask for.

Use Case: Pausing a Game

You can pause or abandon a game at any time by pressing the Back/Clear key. Press the 1 or left soft key to return to the game, or the 3 or right soft key to abandon the game and return to the Main Menu.

Use Case: Asking for Creatures

You ask for creatures in order to gain sets of four of the same creature. Each set is worth 10 points. In Honest modes, you can only ask for creatures you have in your boat, but in Sly and Crafty modes, you may ask for creatures you do not have. Below you see that you do not have any White Sharks in your boat, but you are playing with Crafty rules, so you can ask for them anyway. Choose the Shark, and then confirm that you want to be crafty and ask for them even though you don’t have any in your boat.

Use Case: Answering Cap’n Bob when he asks you for creatures

On Bob’s turns, he will ask you for creatures. If you are honest, you must either give him creatures if you have them, or tell him to Go Fish! if you don’t. If you are playing in Sly or Crafty modes, you may use some of your lies to retain creatures you might normally have to give up when Bob asks for them.

Example 1: [Honest Mode] Bob asks for Crabs. You must give them up. Bob may taunt you.

Example 2: [All Modes] Bob asks for Seagulls. You don’t have any. You tell him to Go Fish!

Example 3: [Sly/Crafty Modes] Bob asks for Crabs. You may want to keep your three Crabs.

1.2.1.4       Game FAQ

This section is used to document any frequently asked questions about the Go Fish! Monterey Bay Application regarding the Game functionality.

Q: How many players can play at a time?
A: This version of Go Fish! Monterey Bay only supports one player playing against Cap’n Bob, your nemesis. The user always goes first.

Q: How are creatures distributed at the beginning of the game?
A: There are 36 creatures – 4 each of 9 species - in the ocean. Five creatures are randomly added to each boat (yours and Bob’s) at the beginning of the game.

Q: When does the game end?
A: The game ends immediately when either player runs out of creatures in their boat.

Q: How does scoring work?
A: Each set of creatures is worth 10 points. You can also get an additional 10 points if you collect all sets - a perfect score for saving all the species.

Q: What can I do if I am playing in Sly or Crafty game modes?
A: If you are playing in Sly or Crafty modes, you are allowed to break the game rules every once in a while. The two rules you can break allow you to (1) ask for creatures you don’t have in your boat and (2) lie to Bob and tell him you don’t have certain creatures when you really do, but don’t want to give them up. Choose your lies carefully, as you only have a limited number per game and you don't want to run out at a crucial moment!

Q: Are there any restrictions in Sly or Crafty game modes?
A: Remember that you have a limited number of times you can break the rules – you want to ensure you save your rule breaking for when it’s really useful. You can only lie and ask for creatures still in the game (not ones already in sets). You cannot lie if there are no creatures left in the ocean, only in hands.

Q: How does Cap’n Bob change his game play to challenge me more?
A: Bob will adjust his game play over the course of several completed games. He adjusts his game play primarily by altering how long he can remember what you’ve asked him for and what he’s asked.
