Alternatives to Expensive ARM Compilers for BREW
Up until recently, the main option for compiling BREW applications if you didn't want to spend $1500-$6000 on either the ARM BREW Builder or the full ADS suite was to use GNUDE or try to build up the GCC tool chain yourself.
Now Ward has written an article on using WinARM for doing the same thing. The advantage here is that it uses the newer GCC compiler, creates smaller code, and may be more efficient.
As with either option, free has its prices, of course. If your company has been using BREW Builder or ADS the whole time, and thus already has money invested in the compilers and make files, switching over may actually cost more than continuing to buy new licenses as your company grows. On the other hand, using a GCC based solution as a secondary solution may allow for more easily debugging applications with GDB on BREW 3.1.4+ handsets that are starting to reach developers (and, soon, the market).

Handango Goes After Powerful Billing Models
Did anyone else breath the word FINALLY under their breaths when they read this headline? We certainly did.
Handango, the great warehouse of downloadable games and other apps, has long provided the mobile world with content. But always in the form of one-shot payment apps. Sure, they added their club discount and reward point systems, but you're still asking your end-users to pay $15 bucks for a game of Sudoku. It's a price point that makes people shop around and play your trials instead of buying your games.
Many of us are familiar with how well the BREW subscription model works. That recurring $3 subscription fee really adds up over time, and people don't think too hard about signing up for such a "small" amount. But we have had no equivalent billing mechanism at Handango - until recently.
The company is now pushing its Mobile Billing Portal (Mobile Billing API) which allows developers enable their mobile applications for all sorts of sweet new billing mechanisms, including:
- Smooth Trial-to-Buy-it Processing
- One-shot purchases
- Monthly, quarterly, or annual Subscription management
- Customer management and account storage
- Pay-per-use services
- E-wallet (declining balance account)
- Or any combination of the above.
Well, it's about time!
In response to the growing number of content providers producing service-rich applications and the interest in subscription billing functionality, we have launched an information portal about our Handango Mobile Billing API for subscription services.
Are you interested in developing subscription applications? Would you like recurring revenue streams from your customers? Here you will find information and overviews about our API, features, example applications using the API, technical resources, how-to's about selling subscription applications through Handango, and FAQs.

Need Handset Information? No Handset In Sight? Try WURLF.
WURFL, or the Wireless Universal Resource File, if an XML file maintained over at SourceForge that covers a large amount of data for a large number of devices. It includes data such as user-agent, various HTML, XHTML, cHTML capabilities, bugs, J2ME attributes, ringer formats, wallpaper formats, and many other pieces of data. I doubt I have to describe how useful data like this can be, so I won't bother.
