The Economist, ringtone sales globally hit USD 3.5 billion last year (2003). In the US alone, USD 80 million of ringtones were sold. However, ringtone download and install usability varies from handset to handset and carrier to carrier.
$3.5B is a lot, but the fact that only $80M of that was in the US is amazing. The market has barely begun here.
Curiously, the author puts down the fact that you can't download ringtones from within the ringtone configuration area. You mean, like you can't download wallpapers from within configuring a wallpaper on a desktop PC? Or like you can't fill gas when in your gas tank without being at a station?
BREW will shortly be solving the number 2 problem the author lists of the shop before paying money.
And the number 3 one is specific to the application developer, but I definitely agree here.
