Symbian formally launches Symbian Signed certification program

Posted at May 18, 2004 7:24 AM in Symbian .

Over 300 applications have already passed the certification program, but Symbian is now formally launching the Symbian Signed certification program.

This program is designed to make certification cheaper and easier for developers allowing broader distribution options. In addition, it provides assurances to carriers and distributors that the applications meet industry agreed upon requirements and quality levels.

For a developer to join the program, they need to obtain an ACS Publisher ID from Verisign, which costs $350 USD annually for unlimited application signing. Then the developer needs to get the application tested. Currently, the program is using Capgemini. The general guideline for the fees has the first submission costing 560 EUR and subsequent submissions of the same application, either upgrades or for retesting in the event of a failure, costing 280 EUR.

More information can be found here.

In all, this program is very similar to QUALCOMM's certification program for BREW.
