QUALCOMM is opening an R&D center in India to help the growth of its wireless technology.

The center is based in Hyderabad, and Qualcomm said it hopes to have about 50 employees by the end of the year. Dunphy said the workers will not be replacing U.S. employees.

Few people have mobile phones in India currently, but it's being called the "next China" for mobile phone growth. Chinese carriers, at one point, had growth rates exceeding 5 million new subscribers a month.
