BREW developers today got a glimpse of the future: handsets in a few years with the processing power of desktop PCs and camera phones surpassing many of the stand-alone digital cameras of today. Sanjay Jha, executive vice president and group president of Qualcomm CDMA Technologies, told the 2004 BREW Developers' Conference that handsets using the company's multimedia platform set of chips will appear in phones from about 30 manufacturers, including upcoming models from Kyocera and Motorola. The multimedia platform integrates such functions as a camera, TV and GPS into one chipset. A "convergence" platform set of chips will start sampling in 2005 that will support a 6-megapixel camera, high-fidelity stereo and up to one gigahertz of processing power using two processors to save battery life, Jha said. It also will have integrated Wi-Fi.WirelessWeek.com |
