It's better than the original, but not enough so to justify it for either an upgrade from the original or for anyone for gamers that need all gaming devices (and maybe a few more people). A smaller size and better form factor aren't enough to transform the N-Gage QD into the next "must-have" gaming platform, but at least this new design addresses the biggest complaints of the original—namely, the absurd need to open up the device and remove the battery to change games. Dubbed the N-Gage QD, the hybrid mobile phone and gaming system is vastly improved over the previous model but still fails to excel as either a game device or a handset. The biggest complaint of the initial N-Gage—the ill-placed MMC slot—was updated, so users can now hot-swap the MMC media into an accessible external bay at the bottom of the unit. And once a game is inserted, it will auto-execute, so you don't have to scroll through the cellular-phone-style menu system to launch a title. Additionally, the new QD is backward compatible with all original N-Gage titles, including Tony Hawk's Underground and The Sims, while future games will be playable on both device versions as well. |
