Vipera to offer MMS Alternative

Vipera announces the immediate global availability of its mobile service for smart phones and PDAs. Vipera allows camera enabled mobile phones to transmit picture messages to other phones as well as to any Internet e-mail account, at a fraction of the cost charged by traditional operators for their MMS service.

Endusers equipped with a Java enabled phone or PDA can register for a Vipera account at no fee. This is done via the Vipera portal at http://www.vipera.com

Once registered with the Vipera portal, endusers can download Java applications (J2ME MIDP) directly to their handheld device. Vipera applications can be downloaded directly to mobile phones using WAP and MIDP provisioning.

Vipera still charges for their services. It's also unclear how they handle phones where pictures aren't available to J2ME applications. Additionally, this does not seem like the sort of application that the carriers will be scrambling to try to get on their catalogs.
