MIDP Web Services API with Example

Posted at October 12, 2005 11:26 PM in J2ME .

forum_nokia_logo.gifForum Nokia has finally release their MIDP Web Services API Developer's GUide that they've been teasing us with for nearly a week now. The package contains an example and the main guide is a PDF.

This document describes the XML and Web Services API defined in JSR-172 [JSR-172]. It also includes a brief description of an example MIDlet using the Web Services API. The Forum Nokia documents A Brief Introduction to XML Parsing in MIDlets and MIDP 1.0: Introduction to Clients for Web Services have already addressed both topics, but these documents were written before JSR-172 was available and third-party libraries were used to access Web Services and parse XML documents. Although the topic is the same as in these previous documents, this document focuses on using the JSR-172 APIs for these tasks. Use of the Web Service APIs brings the developer several benefits over using third-party libraries, including reduced binary size and having a standardized, familiar interface.

The document goes over the XML option package, the Web Services package, and then goes into detail on building up the example.

The example presented in this document consists of a simple MIDlet that acts as a Web Service client interfacing with a remote server. The Web Service exposes one simple operation to return the name of a nation’s capital taking the country’s name as a parameter. The service has only one operation: getCapital(String nation).
