Site Update: How to View Pages

Posted at November 5, 2005 07:21 PM in Site .

So, we upgraded to MovableType 3.2 this weekend. Unfortunately, due in part to the age of this blog, this did not go smoothly. The big issue? Characters like the copyright symbol, apostrophes, ellipsis, emdashes, and other such characters all turned in to a "question mark in a diamond" character.

Why?

Well, it has to do with a character encoding change in both the MT interface and the web site. If you see one of these characters you can view the page properly by changing the encoding to us-ascii. The default encoding is UTF-8 and that no longer draws all pages correctly. I've updated back to about June to fix this problem on some of the pages, but until I find a way to automatically fix this on the older pages the problem will persist.

We aren't the only ones to run across this problem. Some of it also has to do with cutting and pasting content from word documents or other web pages.

We apologize for any trouble this causes in reading or viewing the older pages.
